Delivering Equal Access to Data-Driven Medicine

As long as I can remember, I always had a passion for human genetics.

I got my master's degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Milan and spent the first ten years of my career in the molecular biology and sequencing in academics. At the time, sequencing was not yet available for clinical use as this was in the ‘90s.

After I got married, I spent some time abroad in the Philippines and later in Canada, working in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Manila and the Italian Consulate in Montreal. This experience abroad really opened my eyes to what it means to have access to a certain level of healthcare. It was a very rich experience for me and it really changed my perspective of life.

Eventually, I decided to move to France and I really wanted to have a wealth of knowledge on how to run a company. So, I hired three people and built a small retail business. I learned how to create a company from zero to one hundred. It was a great experience, but after a while I felt the call of genetics again and decided it was time to go back to my passion.

That’s when I found SOPHiA GENETICS, and it was love at first sight. The role merged all my passions and experience: the scientific aspect, the multiculturalism, the fact that you’re in daily face-to-face contact with the people you serve, and the leadership aspect. We have a huge opportunity to help improve patients’ lives. We have the technology to help change their destinies and this is something that is more than an opportunity, it’s a mission that we have to fulfil. Because of that, I have an even higher level of motivation as I did when I joined SOPHiA over three years ago.

As a regional sales director, I today lead a team of 12 people and I get to put all of my experience to use. We communicate a lot about what’s best for the company and of course, about what’s best for patients. People management is a big part of my job. I also interact with both the technology and the patients, so it’s a very mixed role. Every day is different from the previous one. We are never bored. That’s what keeps the vitality of the work.

At SOPHiA GENETICS, the multiculturalism and team spirit are definitely a plus. Also, our job is changing and evolving so much that we are constantly challenged. It means that we are pushed to improve ourselves.

One of the things I explain to candidates during interviews is that working at SOPHiA is not your typical 9 to 5. People here are really passionate about our mission and what they do, and not two days are the same. It’s a lot of passion and a lot of work but there are a lot of positive things we get in return.

I see month after month, year after year, that the impact we can have on patients’ lives gets bigger and bigger, and I look forward to the future…
